Fifteen days into the new year. I acknowledged this milestone with celebration. And then sort of put it all on hold. I often do this in the morning - wake up, then stay in bed another fifteen minutes or so before getting up and starting my day.
Change, of course, happens continuously, whether we notice or participate or not. But awareness of change, even positive change, tends to bring with it some stress and anxiety. The future, after all, is pure possibility, which can only unfold in the present. But the past is all we can know. We can anticipate the future, assign probabilities based on past experience, but we can never really know what will happen.
Fear is natural, nature's way of protecting us with some caution. But it can also stunt and limit us. Repression and denial of the fear just won't work. Fear will leave its mark, whether we notice it or not. So what do we do if we still don't want to get out of bed after that extra fifteen minutes?
Sometimes I can just blast through it - that "feel the fear and do it anyway" approach. But if that doesn't do the job, I know I will need to stop and work through this before it has me completely stuck. There are many approaches to try, but basically it involves going in and exploring to find the triggers and beliefs behind the fear.
Music has always been a useful method for getting past the blocks our busy minds put in the way of self awareness. Another ancient tool for gaining insight is divination, which uses the principles of synchronicity. A friend of mine, Eliana Gilad is a gifted singer who uses her music both for healing and for connecting to inner wisdom. She has partnered with I Ching expert, Hilary Barrett, to offer a two part teleclass entitled, "Opening Space for Change."
